A creamy and cheesy potato bake inspired by French onion soup, perfect as a comforting side dish for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs starchy potatoes (Russets or Yukon Golds)
- 2 large sweet onions (Vidalia or Walla Walla)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 ½ cups shredded Gruyère cheese
- Fresh thyme
- Salt and pepper
- 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Peel and slice the potatoes thinly.
- Slice the onions and sauté them in butter until caramelized.
- In a baking dish, layer the sliced potatoes and caramelized onions.
- Pour heavy cream over the layers and season with salt, pepper, and fresh thyme.
- Top with shredded Gruyère cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
Notes
- For added flavor, you can sprinkle some garlic powder or nutmeg in the layers.
- This dish can be prepared ahead of time and baked just before serving.
